My Crochet Journey(Emilly)

My name is Emilly Tumusiime, CEO of Crochet Savvy UG. My crochet journey began in the halls of Maryhill High School, where I eagerly anticipated home management classes that introduced me to the world of crafting.
Although I learned the basics of crocheting in school, it wasn’t until the pandemic in 2021 that I truly embraced the craft. With my work contract ended, I used my savings to open a hardware store in my community, which remained operational during the lockdown. However, business was unpredictable, with some days bringing no customers at all. To keep myself busy and earn some money, I decided to revive my passion for crocheting.
Initially, I started my crochet venture under the name “Handikrafts UG.” Encouraged by the positive feedback from clients and the support of returning customers, my love for the business grew. Last year, I realized the importance of building a brand and officially registered my business as “The Crochet Savvy UG.” We also launched our website, www.crochetsavvyug.com, marking a new chapter in our journey.
Being part of the Crochet Community of the Crocheters’ Association Uganda has been an honor. This association has connected me with incredibly talented and creative women who share the same passion for crochet. It has also provided a platform to exercise my leadership skills. As one of the directors, I lead the Public Relations team as well as assist the partnerships team, contributing to the growth and visibility of our community.
Through Crochet Savvy UG, I currently employ three people and hope to expand our team as the business grows. My vision is to create positive change and impact in my community, particularly for women, by providing employment and skills training opportunities. Crochet has not only been a source of personal fulfillment but also a means to uplift others.
My crochet journey, from school days to building a brand, has been one of resilience and passion. I urge all other business owners not to give up, it’s a steep slope but take each step at a time.
